Nel 1899, ricordando i suoi soggiorni in Italia, Lev Tolstoj scriveva alla moglie: «Firenze, è vero, anche a me piace per la modestia e la gradevolezza. Al mio tempo – tuttavia – d'improvviso si cominciò a sciupare: era diventata capitale». Molti dei viaggiatori stranieri che in quegli anni intraprendevano il grand tour lungo le strade italiane rimanevano interdetti davanti ai cantieri che affollavano il centro storico. Osservando gli sventramenti degli stretti vicoli fiorentini, Ruskin rimpiangeva la Firenze immobile di alcuni anni prima, quando era ancora possibile attraversare le stesse strade percorse da Dante. La trasformazione aveva preso il via con l'unità d'Italia, quando i politici sabaudi avevano deciso di spostare temporaneamente la capitale da Torino a Firenze, nella speranza di stabilirla un giorno a Roma, ancora da conquistare. Il ruolo di capitale, seppure provvisoria, aveva reso necessari cambiamenti strutturali che minacciavano l'antica pianta della città: le mura medievali furono abbattute e al loro posto nacquero ariosi boulevard e interi quartieri sorsero a ridosso della città vecchia. Le trasformazioni di Firenze tuttavia non sono paragonabili a quelle che coinvolsero Roma. Dal 1871 le vie dell'Urbe sono invase di calcinacci e ponteggi, mucchi di pozzolana rossa e muraglie di detriti, lastre di travertino e polvere. I borghi del centro demoliti o ridisegnati, gli enormi spazi verdi delle ville patrizie all'interno delle mura – caratteristica peculiare della geografia urbana di Roma – venduti e edificati. Quella che era la provinciale e immobile città dei papi cominciò a crescere a dismisura, senza controllo. Utilizzando le testimonianze e i diari dei viaggiatori del tempo, Attilio Brilli insegue la capitale nel suo viaggio da Torino a Roma, attraverso Firenze, e ci restituisce la cronaca avvincente di un momento decisivo della storia italiana: la nascita di una società moderna, espressione di una nuova classe sociale, che avrebbe cambiato nel profondo la fisionomia delle grandi città italiane.
